  • More than two million bus journeys, 511,000 cycle trips and 541,000 pedestrian trips were recorded across Queenstown Lakes during the 2025/26 financial year, highlighting the growing number of people choosing alternatives to driving alone.

The latest QLDC Transport Network Monitoring Report shows continued growth in walking, cycling and public transport use across the district. Several shared paths, particularly in Wānaka, recorded significant increases in use, while Queenstown's Orbus network continued to perform strongly with patronage increasing and bus reliability averaging over 90% throughout the year.

These results reflect a district that continues to grow, but they also show more people are embracing a wider range of transport options. Every bus journey, bike ride and walk helps reduce congestion, lower emissions and create a healthier, more connected community.

Supporting people to make sustainable transport choices is a key part of QLDC's Better Ways to Go Mode Shift Plan and Climate and Biodiversity Plan. While traffic volumes continue to increase alongside population and visitor growth, the uptake of walking, cycling and public transport demonstrates the value of investing in transport choices that help people move around the district safely, efficiently and sustainably.
