Electrification goes mainstream

Electrification is no longer a niche climate topic. From homes and businesses to transport and energy systems, the conversation is increasingly focused on how clean electricity can reduce emissions while improving resilience and affordability.

  • As New Zealand heads towards the General Election, clean energy and electrification are becoming a bigger part of the national conversation. Political parties across the spectrum are making promises around energy affordability, resilience, solar power, batteries and electric transport, highlighting just how mainstream the topic has become.

Here in Queenstown Lakes, we've been helping drive that conversation.

This year's Electrify Queenstown event organised by Destination Queenstown brought together more than 1,000 attendees, including politicians, business leaders, energy experts and community members to explore New Zealand's energy future. The event featured a national political debate alongside practical demonstrations of technologies that are already helping homes, businesses and communities reduce costs, improve resilience and lower emissions.

The growing focus on electrification is great news from a climate and resilience perspective. Electrification can help reduce emissions, improve energy security, lower long-term operating costs and support a more resilient local economy. For a fast-growing district like Queenstown Lakes, these benefits are increasingly important.

Perhaps most encouragingly, the conversation is no longer about whether the transition will happen, but how quickly we can make it happen and who has the best ideas to get us there.
